Tahini's Has 3 Million YouTube Subscribers and 76 Restaurants. The Gap Between Them Is the Lesson
Three million YouTube subscribers. More than 2 billion video views. Seventy-six restaurants.
Those are the numbers Tahini's, the Canadian shawarma chain, shared this week in a Franchising.com feature about how its social content turns fans into franchisees. One Toronto franchisee, Juliet Noronha, was introduced to the brand by her son, a big fan of the videos. The chain now runs 76 restaurants with 70 franchisees and plans 30 more across Canada and the United States over the next two years.
It is a good story. It is also an incomplete one, and the missing half is where franchisors should pay attention.
What is actually happening
Tahini's has built something most franchise brands only talk about: an audience that arrives before the sales team does. CMO Aly Hamam frames it as community rather than reach: "it's not just about building an audience, it's about building a community around the brand." For franchise development, that matters. A prospect who already knows the brand, the tone and the product needs less convincing, and the cost of finding that prospect falls.
Now look at the timeline. In October 2024, Retail Insider reported Tahini's at 50 locations, with nearly 2 billion views across its social channels and a founder forecast of another 50 openings in 2025. Two years later the count is 76, with eight opened so far in 2026.
That is real growth, about 50% in two years. But it is well short of the pace the brand itself predicted, during a period when the audience kept growing.
Why it matters
Content can fill the top of the franchise funnel. It cannot widen the bottlenecks below it. Every new unit still needs a qualified operator, a site, a lease, a supply chain and a training slot. The Franchising.com piece describes exactly that sequence at Tahini's: start with the franchisee, then find the location, set up supply, train, support the build-out. None of those steps move at the speed of a viral video.
There is a second, quieter point in the numbers. 76 restaurants and 70 franchisees means the system is overwhelmingly single-unit owners. Fans can make enthusiastic first-time franchisees. Whether they become multi-unit operators, the people who usually carry a system's growth, is a different test, and a fan base does not answer it.
For brands in Vietnam and across Southeast Asia, this is close to home. Many local F&B brands already have strong TikTok and Facebook followings, and franchise enquiries often start there. The temptation is to read follower counts as a development pipeline. They are a lead source. The pipeline is what your system can approve, open and support each quarter.
Five things to do if content is your franchise sales engine
Separate fans from operators in your funnel. Track how many enquiries come from social, and how many of those pass your financial and operational screen. If you cannot report both numbers, you do not know whether content is working.
Set your opening target from capacity, not audience. Count how many sites your real estate team can secure, how many franchisees your trainers can onboard and how many openings your field team can support. That is your ceiling, whatever the view count says.
Build a multi-unit path early. If most of your franchisees own one unit, decide what a strong performer needs to earn a second, and make that path visible before the first unit opens.
Keep the brand voice and the franchise offer apart. Funny, warm content builds affection. Your FDD, or the disclosure documents your market requires, must stay sober and precise. Prospects who fell in love on YouTube deserve the same disclosure discipline as anyone else.
Announce growth you can defend. A missed forecast costs more trust with prospects than a modest one. Talk about what is signed and funded, not what you hope.
The real question
Tahini's shows that a brand can make itself famous before it makes itself big. That is a genuine advantage, and few franchisors have earned it. But fame is not a growth system. The brands that turn an audience into durable scale will be the ones that build the operator pipeline, site engine and support model to match.
Your audience decides how many people knock on the door. Your system decides how many you can let in.
